Jesus compared death to sleep. For example, consider John 11:11-14 (NIV), which quotes Jesus’ comments when His friend died. “…Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”
“His disciples replied, ‘Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.’ Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
“So then he told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead.'”
(“The Bible calls death ‘sleep’ over 50 times.” http://www.bibleinfo.com/en/content/what-does-bible-say-about-it)
Yes, between Jesus’ horrible death on the cross on Friday afternoon and His resurrection Sunday morning, He slept peacefully. Although his friends and family were in consternation, He was not aware of the earthquake or the darkness or that he was taken down from the cross. He slept peacefully in the tomb through the Sabbath hours.
Yes, Jesus slept. But, although people in Jerusalem didn’t know, WE KNOW — His Father would send the angels to awaken him the very next morning!
